History of Clopay Building Products
1859
Established in Cincinnati, Ohio Clopay began as the Seinsheimer Paper Company, selling paper products and other related items. The name “Clopay” was developed in the early twentieth century as an acronym formed by the contraction of the words “cloth-paper.”
1964
Clopay enters the garage door business with the purchase of Baker-Aldor-Jones of Hialeah, Florida.
1969
Francis Products, Inc. of Russia, Ohio is acquired.
1972
Both Francis and B-A-J switch to the Clopay brand.
1986
Clopay is acquired by Instrument Systems Corporation of New York.
1992
Clopay expands its garage door operations with the acquisition of Ideal Door, Phenix Door, and Automatic Door Company.
1994
Clopay leads the garage door industry with the introduction of the Safety Bottom Bracket, which is designed to prevent accidental injury if a bottom bracket is removed while the garage door is closed and under spring tension.
1995
Clopay’s parent company takes on a new look and a new name - the “Griffon Corporation.”
1997
Clopay Building Products acquires Holmes-Hally Industries, making Clopay Building Products the largest manufacturer of residential garage doors in the United States.
1998
Clopay introduces its industry-leading patented EZ-SET Spring System, which makes garage door installation easier and safer for consumers.
1999
Clopay Building Products divests itself of the Roll-lite® self storage business to focus its resources on sectional garage door products.
2000
Clopay introduces the Reserve Collection Custom and Semi-Custom wood carriage house garage doors. Gene Colleran became the new president, replacing Bob Caulk.
2002
The company relocates its headquarters to Mason, Ohio.
2003
Clopay introduces the Coachman Collection steel and composite carriage house doors. |
